What is Fluorine Dating, and how is it used? fluorine: (n.) flu-o-rine a nonmetallic chemical, usually found in a pale yellow flammable gas form. It is a hazardous, poisonous gas that is absorbed by bones that lies under soil. Archeologists use the fluorine technique by checking the amount of fluorine stored in the excavated bones. The bones in the ground absorb fluorine in the surrounding soil, establishing that the age of the bones are proportional to the amount fluorine. Fluorine dating is a very economical, costing around 10-30 u.s. dollars, however to date an artifact, several artifacts are needed for comparision.
