ION Purpose • “The ION is a scientific, nonprofit organization, whose programs are directed toward advancing the science, art, and standards of navigation by coordinating the knowledge and achievements of practicing navigators, scientists, and those involved in the development and production of navigation equipment.”
ION Meetings • ION GNSS Meeting of the Satellite Division - September • Biggest meeting - ~2000 attendees • 6 tracks x 6 sessions x 8 papers, + alternates • Started as GPS only, but now focus on all satellite navigation • ION National Technical Meeting - January • ION Annual Meeting - April & June
ION Meeting Proceedings • Proceedings available from each of 3 annual meetings: • National Technical Meeting (Jan) • Annual Meeting (June) • Satellite Division (Sep) • Now in CD only • Members can retrieve articles back to 1990
Journal of the ION • Refereed journal • Published 4x per year • Picked from best Proceedings papers, invited papers, and submitted papers • Members may down-load articles back to 1945 from website
ION Satellite Division • Runs the annual ION GNSS meetings • Separate slate of officers • ION GNSS meetings include 6 tracks for 3 days, trade show, student papers, strong international presence • Often sponsors many of the more “creative” initiatives
ION Awards • Satellite Division - Johannes Kepler Award -- Sustained and Outstanding Contributions to Nav • Weems Award -- Contributions to Art & Science of Nav • Thurlow Award -- Contributions to Science of Nav • Burka Award -- Outstanding paper • Tycho Brahe Award -- Space Navigation, Guidance and Control • Hays Award - Encouragement, inspiration & support in advancing navigation • Early Achievement Award - Outstanding achievement in Nav by age 35 • Superior Achievement Award -- Practicing navigator • ION Fellows • Congressional and Executive Fellow Program - A year in Washington, DC
