  3. Why Family Engagement? (1) Research • “…we found that students with involved parents, no matter what their income or background, are more likely to: • Earn higher grades and test scores, and enroll in higher-level programs • Be promoted, pass their classes and earn credits • Attend school regularly • Have better social skills, show improved behavior and adapt well to school • Graduate and go on to post-secondary education Anne Henderson, Karen Mapp SWEL Study 2002

  8. Activities Break 1: How Do You/Would You Create Trust and Communication • What are your thoughts about the families in your school? What new thoughts can you hold? • With a partner talk about how you create a welcoming environment and communicate with your families? • What new ideas do you have? • On your worksheet jot down new ideas for creating trust and communication

  10. Activities Break: Ways to Engage and Collaborate • What do you think about each part of your community? Can you view them as equal and valuable? • With a partner talk about the groups in your community. Which one(s) do you need to connect/collaborate with more? • How will you re-think then connect? Where could you collaborate? • On your worksheet, jot down some ideas for connecting and collaborating.

  12. Parents and Schools Need to Create a Common Vision Once there is a Common Vision, then you can determine how the Core Standards (or any standards or curriculum) will help obtain that Vision

  13. Parents Will Help When You Ask Them and Show Them How • “…the differences in whether parents believe they should help or can help are shaped by what the school and the teachers do. For example, if teachers want parents to think that they should help, teachers must demonstrate this with an active program of parent involvement in learning activities at home. • If teachers want parents to feel confident that they can help, teachers and administrators must organize and conduct workshops for parents on how to help.” (italics mine)Epstein

  19. Assessing the Value of Parent Engagement in the Common Core • #3 Reason for Family Engagement: It Works! • Does it work in the way we want? • Yes, always. Yet-- It works according to the vision/intention/belief that is established • We asses what we envision. We need to assess a common vision. • Your job is to be part of the vision!!
