1. Mystery Class Project Ms. Waldrop’s and Ms. Hendrix’s Class 2010 – 2011

2. About the Project Somewhere on the earth there are ten mystery classes hiding. It’s your job to find them!

3. Sunrise and Sunset Data Using weekly sunrise and sunset data clues we made line graphs to help chart the photoperiods of each mystery class. We then compared them to our photoperiod to help us narrow our search.

4. Clues After eight weeks we started receiving clues. Some sure were hard! We had to do a lot of research to find the answers! “These birds are symbols of our state and our river, and our city and its bell tower too.”

5. Meet our Teams Each team worked really hard on the project. Here’s what they had to say about what they learned and about their mystery class.

7. What We Learned • We learned about photoperiods- how much sun one place gets • We learned about military time and how to read it • We learned how to count a photoperiod • We learned about sunrise and sunset data

8. Facts about Perth, Australia • Whale Sharks live in the Ningaloo Reef near Perth, Australia • Perth, Australia is the capital of Western Australia • Perth, Australia has a bell tower called the Swan Bell Tower • Perth, Australia also has a river called the Black Swan River

11. What We Learned • We Learned about photoperiods. • We learned how to do Universal Time. • We learned about the two hemispheres, northern and southern. • We learned latitude runs east and west, and longitude runs north and south.

12. About our Mystery Class • Guatemala City makes the coffee beans, that makes the Starbucks we have. • Their class likes Justin Bieber. • They like the Twilight series and the Harry Potter series. • Their teacher is Ms. Sowell. She teaches math and science.

13. Mystery Class #3 SInae IV, Antarctica Mystery Class #3: Holly, Grace, Henley, and Robert

14. Meeting Mystery “Class” #3 OurMystery Class is in Antarctica. They are on a nunatak, a mountain encircled by a glacier, in the Queen Maud Lands. The facility is owned by South Africa but was used to be owned by Norwegians.

15. What We Learned • We learned about latitude and longitude , and there are 24 time zones around the world. • We also learned about photoperiods and how we can use them to find other places around the world. • Finally, we learned that Antarctica has many stations for researching.

What We Learned About SINAE • We learned that SINAE IV was once owned by the Norwegians, but it was handed over to South Africa. • Also, we learned that at the SINAE IV base, they ride “caterpillars” that look like the image below. • We also learned that SINAE IV has 10 People…. and a dude named Robert!

18. What we Learned • We learned about Military Time. • We learned about Latitude and Longitude. • We learned that a photoperiod is the amount if sunlight a place gets in 24 hours. • We learned that it is hard to find out your place in the beginning but it gets easier.

19. Fun Facts About Hong Kong • Hong Kong was ruled by England for over 100 years. • Hong Kong is over 6 times the size of Washington D.C. • In Hong Kong, they eat Chinese food like steamed buns, rice or noodles, and dim sum. • Hong Kong is famous for its skyscrapers, but only 30% live in them.

21. What we learned We learned about latitude and longitude. We also leaned about Greenwich where they use universal time. I learned about Military time where they keep counting the hours up to 24 instead of 12 two times. For example 1:00 would be 13:00 in military time. We learned about universal time.

22. Facts! • The colors of the flag are black, green, red, yellow, blue, and white. • Their name was changed three times Mafeking, Mafikerg, and finally Mafikeng. • Their school has ages from 3 to 18 years.

24. What We Learned • We learned about the longitude and latitude. Longitude is east to west. Latitude is north to south. • We also learned about photoperiods. A photoperiod is the length of sunlight in a day. • We learned about the military time. If you are in military time you don’t go from 12:00 to 1:00, You would go from 12:00 to 13:00. • Also we learned about Greenwich, England; it is important because you can tell how many time zones a way you are from Greenwich.

About our Mystery Class • A very interesting fact about our mystery class is it only has one member a girl whom is home schooled. • Also the modern state of Israel was established in 1948. • Israel has what is known as “Mediterranean” climate, with only two seasons: rainy winters and dry, sunny summers. • Israel is very important to many different religions.

27. What This Awesome Group Learned We learned about Military Time, instead of 12 hours on the clock there are 24 hours on the clock. We also learned about latitude and longitude, they are imaginary lines of the planet. Latitude is east to west and longitude is north to south . Finally, we learned about photoperiods. They are the times between sunrise and sunset.

Interesting Facts about Mystery Class #7 • Our class in Buenos Aires held the longest four square game in the world and was placed in the Guinness World Record Book in 2009. • We found out that our class in Buenos Aires has a lot of cool foods. For example, empanadas, alfajores, dulce de leche which is a soft cookie with sweet goo in it that tastes like cameral; also they have a yummy croissant like roll that is called a medialunas. • Our class in Buenos Aires has students that are bilingual and trilingual which means they can speak more than one language.

32. What We Learned • We learned about longitude (north and south) and latitude (east and west). • We also learned about Universal Time. • Lastly, we learned what a photoperiod is.

33. Facts about Sarnia, ON, Canada Sarnia is on one of the Great Lakes, Lake Huron. Although French and English are their official languages, they also speak Ojibwe. They are 3rd and 4th grade students at Cathcart Public School.

38. What We’ve Learned • We have learned about latitude and longitude. Longitude lines are the vertical lines that run on the globe. Latitude lines are the horizontal lines that run on the globe. • We learned about photoperiod. Photoperiod is the amount of sunlight that places get. • We learned about universal time, sunrise, and sunset.

Facts About Our Mystery Class • Our mystery class’s country, South Korea, isn’t allowed to visit with their neighbors, North Korea, for freedom purposes. • They are a seventh grade class at Taejon Christian International School. • In Daejon they have a stadium called the Purple Stadium. • Also, they are known for their technology and science.

40. We did it! Our Class was one of the finalist in the project! We were so excited!
