    2. Aims of the Session To outline the main reasons for why good practice in infection control procedures are important on a surgical ward To explain why good practice in hand washing is important in preventing infection To provide evidence to support good practice in hand washing by nurses

Reasons for good practice in infection control procedures on a surgical ward Prevent spread of infection from one patient to another or from nurse to patient when in hospital ( hospital acquired infection ) Meet the Department of Health requirements for reducing hospital acquired infection ( DoH 2007 ) Save patient’s lives and reduce additional suffering and unnecessary pain and anxiety

Importance of Hand-washing in infection control Key to prevention and control of infection Choices of hand-decontamination : soap and water , alcohol based hand rubs or gel or antimicrobial hand wash Six- step hand wash technique ( Endacott et al 2009) Use of personal protective equipment: gloves , disposable aprons and eye and mouth protection Student nurses : importance of learning in clinical skills sessions
