Birth Date and Growing Up • Jane Goodall was born in London England on April 3rd, 1934. • She got a toy chimpanzee from her father when she turned 2 years old. It was named Jubilee and she still has it today. • Jane was always interested in animals and helping them. When Jane was little she was very interested in animals and especially Africa. • When she was young her favorite books were Tarzan and The Jungle Book. • When Jane was 20 years old she wanted to go to Africa and study animals. She told the mayor that she would be coming to Africa, but his response was a little different than what she was expecting. The mayor said no! It is not safe to come alone. So, she got her mother to come along. http://www.webster.edu/~woolflm/janegoodall.html http://www.janegoodall.org
Early Story • Jane set off on her journey when she was about 23 years old. • Her mother, Vanne, who was an author, totally supported Jane and even was her first travel companion. • When Jane arrived in Africa she found that she had a love for the chimpanzees and noticed that we had a lot in common with these animals. • Chimps are like us, their children are sometimes frightened like we are sometimes. • Jane was very patient and observant and very good at being welcomed by the animals. • She was able to complete her childhood dream of watching animals in their habitat. http://www.webster.edu/~woolflm/janegoodall.html http://www.janegoodall.org
Contributions • Because of her research we know that Chimpanzees have different personalities and that they can use tools. • Her studies show us that Chimpanzees are very much like us. • She not only observed animals but she also helped to protect them and their habitat. • She has encouraged people all over the world to help protect the animals and their habitats. • Jane was very close with her mother and was always encouraged by her. http://www.webster.edu/~woolflm/janegoodall.html http://www.janegoodall.org
