  1. Simon JollyProgress & Plans Imperial College NuFact Meeting 28/04/05

  2. IC NuFact Areas of Interest • Front End Test Stand: • Source • Low Energy Beam Transport • RFQ • Chopper • Spectrometer • MICE • Not my bag (maybe later)…

  3. Low Energy Beam Transport Early ENVELPC simulation results from John Back… • Transport beam from source to RFQ. • Reduce unequal x/y emittance to acceptable levels for RFQ. • Minimise particle losses.

  4. Requirements • LEBT layout needs to be frozen by September: optimisation of dimensions and solenoid strengths needed in detail (only ENVELPC so far). • Optimisation highly dependent on input beam conditions and space charge compensation. • Space charge compensation not yet included: need to simulate gas pressure to optimise space charge compensation.

  5. Available Programs • ENVELPC - beam envelope optimisation (John Back) • General Particle Tracer (GPT) - full ray tracing (available from RAL). http://www.pulsar.nl/gpt/ • MAFIA - magnet simulation package http://www.cst.de/Content/Products/MAFIA/Overview.aspx • MOLFLOW - gas pressure calculations (obtain from Daresbury?)

  6. Plans • Set up GPT for use at IC: • Available licenses, location & machine. • Run ISIS simulations from Alan Letchford & match results. • Run ENVELPC code from John Back & match results. • Clarify initial beam data (from source) and hard limits on LEBT: • Initial drift length. • RFQ input emittance.

  7. Plans (2) • Construct GPT model of LEBT, using ISIS model as a basis. • Include real rather than box fields for solenoids for LEBT sim in GPT. • Include space charge compensation in GPT with 0%, 100% and 90% space charge comp. • Simulate pressure distribution inside LEBT using MOLFLOW and incorporate into GPT sim. • Coordinate with John Back at Warwick. • Model spectrometer in GPT, using MAFIA field maps (Ajit) - parallel to LEBT sim.

  8. Goals • Full LEBT sim. in GPT, including real input emittance, field maps and space charge compensation, to freeze layout by September. • Full spectrometer sim. in GPT, using MAFIA magnet simulations.
