  2. What is photosynthesis? A process plants use to make their own food • Plants’ leaves contain chlorophyll Chlorophyll (green color) makes photosynthesis possible.

  3. What are the ingredients of photosynthesis? • Sun • Water • Carbon dioxide ( CO2 ) CO2

  4. What are the products of photosynthesis? Photosynthesis results are: • Sugar ( glucose) C6H12O6 and • Oxygen. O2

  5. Radiant Energy Formula: 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy C6H12O6 + 6O2 Chemical Energy Glucose (Sugar) Carbon dioxide + Water + Sunlight Glucose (Sugar) + Oxygen

  6. What energy conversion happens during photosynthesis? Transfer of RADIANT energy into CHEMICAL energy

  7. THE SUN: MAIN SOURCE OF ENERGY FOR LIFE ON EARTH

  8. RADIANT CHEMICAL • What type of energy does sunlight turn into on earth?

  9. Photosynthesis animation • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gLa5EWn9OI&feature=related

  10. Why is chemical energy useful to us? • We need chemical energy to be able to move and grow How do we get chemical energy? • Food Where does all energy on Earth come from? • SUN

  11. Animals including humans make the CO2 (carbon dioxide) plants need. They (the plants) make the O2 (oxygen) and food we need.

  12. Plants and animals need each other to survive. What type of symbiotic relationship is that?

  13. Photosynthesis song. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1_uez5WX1o&feature=PlayList&p=90D85168B976AB99&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=52

  14. In what part of the plant does photosynthesis occur? • In what structure within the plant leaf cells does photosynthesis occur?

  15. What is it in the Chloroplast that actually captures the sunlight and changes it into sugar? CHLOROPHYLL • Chlorophyll is a pigment that makes plants look GREEN

  16. Chemical Formula 6CO2+6H2O C6H12O6+ 6O2 Radiant Energy Glucose - Chemical Energy Carbon Dioxide Water Oxygen

  17. Things that are produced: O2 Sugar Things that are needed: Sunlight Water CO2

  18. We give the plants our ____ waste and they give us their ____ waste. CO2 O2

  19. Photosynthesis stations Station 1: Watch the video and then take the quiz. http://www.growingthenextgeneration.com/agrium-games/Animation/index.htm http://www.growingthenextgeneration.com/agrium-games/quiz/index.htm

  20. Station 2: Draw Photosynthesis (title) • Color picture • Include chemical formula (with names of compounds) CO2 + H2O + sunlight  C6H12O6 + O2 Carbon Dioxide + Water + Radiant energy  Glucose (chemical energy) + Oxygen Label • Sun • Water • Carbon Dioxide • Oxygen • Glucose (sugar) • Radiant energy • Chemical energy

  21. Station 3: Photosynthesis is a process in which sunlight energy is used to make glucose. The site of photosynthesis is in the chloroplast – a organelle found in the leaves of green plants. The main functions of chloroplasts are to produce food (glucose) during photosynthesis, and to store food energy. Chloroplasts contain the pigment, chlorophyll. Chlorophyll absorbs most of the colors in the color spectrum, and reflects only green and yellow wavelengths of light. This is why we see leaves as green or yellow – because these colors are reflected into our eyes. • What is photosynthesis? • Where does photosynthesis occur? 3. What are chloroplasts and where are they found? • What are the two main functions of chloroplasts? 5. Why do most leaves appear green? 6. What is the primary pigment found in the chloroplast?

  22. Station 4: Glucose is another name for sugar. The molecular formula for glucose is C6H12O6. Plants make sugar by using the energy from sunlight to transform CO2 from the air with water from the ground into glucose. This process, called photosynthesis, occurs in the chloroplast of the plant cell. During this process, oxygen (O2) is created as a waste product and is released into the air for us to breath. The formula for photosynthesis is: CO2 + H2O + sunlight  C6H12O6 + O2 This formula says that carbon dioxide and water molecules are combined with the energy from sunlight to produce sugar and oxygen. The reactants in photosynthesis (what is used) are CO2, water and sun. The plant gets water from the ground through its roots. The plant collects carbon dioxide from the air. Much of the carbon dioxide comes from living organisms that exhale it, but some also comes from factory smokestacks and car fumes. • What is the formula for photosynthesis? • What three things are used to make glucose in photosynthesis? • Where does the water come from? • Where does the water enter the plant? • What are some sources of CO2? • What type of energy does the plant use to convert CO2 and H2O into sugar?

  23. Station 5: The products (what is made) are glucose and oxygen. The glucose produced is used by the plant for energy and growth. We also use this glucose by eating plants. The oxygen produced is released into the air for us to breath. Photosynthesis is essential for all life on earth, because it provides food and oxygen. • What is produced in photosynthesis? • What is the glucose used for? • What is the oxygen used for?

  24. What is photosynthesis?process in which radiant energy from sun is used to make glucose (chemical energy) • Where does photosynthesis occur?Leaf - chloroplast 3. What are chloroplasts and where are they found?an organelle found in the leaves of green plants • What are the two main functions of chloroplasts? The main functions of chloroplasts are to produce food (glucose) during photosynthesis, and to store food energy 5. Why do most leaves appear green?Chlorophyll absorbs most of the colors in the color spectrum, and reflects only green and yellow wavelengths of light 6. What is the primary pigment found in the chloroplast?chlorophyll.
