Electrostatics Chapter 21-1
Electric Charge • Explain the atom and the charges on an atom • Neutrons • Protons • electrons
Transferring Charge • Why is an atom electrically neutral? • How can it become charged negatively? • How can it become charged positively? • What does static mean? • What is static electricity?
Conservation of Charge • Charge can be transferred from one object to another, but it cannot be destroyed
Law of Electrostatics • What charges attract? • What charges repel? • Opposite charges attract and like charges repel
Electric Field • The area around a charged object • The area has the same charge at the charged object • Strongest nearest the electrons
Comparing Electric & Gravitational Forces • Which is larger? • A thousand trillion trillion trillion times larger (1036)
Conductors • A material that allows electrons to move easily through it • won’t retain a charge • Silver is the best, copper, metals
Insulators • A material that won’t allow electrons to pass through easily • Wood, plastics, glass, water, air
Charging by Conduction • Charging by contact • Touch the uncharged object with the charged object • Resulting charge is the same as the charging object • Transfer of electrons
Charging by Induction • Charging at a distance • The charging object and the uncharged object don’t touch • The resulting charge is the opposite • A temporary charge
Lightning • Explain how lightning forms • Where is it safe to be in a lightning storm? • Safe position if caught far from shelter
Thunder • Lightning produces both light and sound waves • Lightning produces great amounts of heat • Air temperature rises to 30,000oC • Causing air to expand rapidly producing the sound waves.
Grounding • The process of neutralizing a charged object • Earth is a good ground because it is a good source or sink of electrons
The Electroscope • A device that detects a charge
