Remote-sensing based landcover classification of the Provincelands Dunes
Procedure • Field Data Collection • Collect minimum of 50 GPS points for each landcover type • “Training” points • Post-processing of Data • Differentially correct these points and download • Create Input Grids • Spectral values from orthos/Quickbird™ • Derived indices (e.g., NDVI, greenness etc.) • Landform position (e.g., elevation, slope, height above groundwater table)
Procedure • Extract values from all the input grids for all of the training points • Saved as a .csv file • Build a Random Forest classification in R • Using package: randomForest • Input data is the .csv (from step #4 above) 6.Run all your input grids through the RandomForest to create a predicted map (pixel-based)

Mapping the United States of America • Highlights: • All states and territories mapped at the same scale • Small parks are symbolized so they can be seen • Still have work on the index map.
Build it and they won’t come • State of Natural Resource information systems, 2006 • Many systems in balkanized state • Separate budgets • Separate Management Teams, Governance • Separate Technical Teams • Built with little or no user input or requirements • Separate logins, passwords, navigation • Frustrated users • Must access multiple systems and manually relate information • Poor performance and usability • Users avoid systems – data weren’t getting entered
2006 Natural Resource Program Center IT Policy • NRPC will: • integrate all applications (start with NatureBib, NPSpecies, NPS Data Store, but will eventually include other systems) • eliminate redundant data storage • streamline standard functions across applications…
2006 Natural Resource Program Center IT Policy NRPC will create a central web portal, a single sign-on system, and a common user interface for all natural resource applications.
IRMA is… • Integration of Resource Management Applications • Umbrella project that is implementing the new IT policy • Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) framework: design services that can be re-used by many applications
IRMA brings fundamental changes to NR data systems • User needs drive the technology: starting with: interviews, workshops, results from last year’s DM conference • Systems are designed based on user requirements and workflow • Systems are designed in order to share functions and data: build once, use many times

IRMA Progress – 1st Year • Hired Randy Leonard- SOA architect • Improved communication methods and tools • Reorganized development team • Standardized software development process • Upgraded IT infrastructure • Redesign of NPSpecies underway • Redesign of NatureBib and NPS Data Store next in line
conceptual model IRMA Goals: Easy searching and posting Consistent look and feel across applications for data entry and retrieval No more user IDs and passwords Ability to customize pages Ability to be notified when records change in a system
IRMA Overview – Thursday afternoon • Service-oriented architecture: laying the foundation • A preview of how NPSpecies is being transformed from a data “silo” into a series of compact and resusable “services” • NatureBib and the NPS Data Store: what’s coming up and how we need your help Poster, plus http://nrpcsharepoint/irma
