Main events of the Revolution • Easter Rising:1916; Irish republicans took over buildings and staged an uprising • Many republican leaders were executed • British government going to introduce conscription, Irish Anti-conscription Committee was formed and there was a general strike • The Sinn Fein party were believed to be leaders of anti-conscription, and were arrested • Conscription plans dropped, Sinn Fein elected in General Election • created Dail Eireann, an independent parliament
Main events of the Revolution • Eamon De valera was elected president of the Dail Eireann in 1919 and appointed a cabinet • The Dail Eireann then established a court system and a police force • Britain outlawed Dail Eireann • Michael Collins founded “The Squad” which was an Irish Republican Army
Peace Treaty • In 1921, Representatives of Dail Eireann arrived in London to negotiate a treaty • After negotiating for weeks, Representatives from Dail Eireann and British Parliment both signed the Anglo-Irish Treaty • Had to be approved by all of Dail Eireann before Ireland could become a self-governing dominion of Britain • The treaty was narrowly approved, and Ireland became a free state in 1922
Michael Collins • In 1917, he was elected to the Sinn Fein executive. • Organized a national loan to fund a rebellion,created “the Squad”, and developed an arms smuggling program. • By 1919 Michael had been made president of the Irish Republican Brotherhood supreme council • He was also the commander of the IrishRepublican Army and minister of finance in the Dail government
Eamon De Valera • Elected leader of the Sinn Fein • Created the Dail Eireann
Analysis • Importance: • Ireland and its people became more independent from Great Britain • Success: • It was a success for the people of Ireland because they achieved their desired Independence
