  2. Biotechnology and Agriculture • Biotechnology is paving the way for biofuels. • Seven million farmers in 18 countries grew genetically engineered crops on 16.72 million acres last year. • Genetically modified foods that are engineered to resist pests are available to consumers.

  3. Biotechnology and Forensics • DNA fingerprinting: • has improved criminal investigations • has advanced anthropology research • has contributed to improved wildlife management • is important in paternity testing

  4. Biotech Industry Focus Areas Research and Development Find new cures for diseases or new ways for solving problems such as hunger, energy, environment, or crimes. Quality Control Make sure products meet specific health and safety guidelines Manufacturing and Production Develop and maintain the biotech machinery that facilitates research and produces products for consumers.
