Methods of Characterization There are four methods of characterization (the way in which a narrator brings a character to life). Physical Appearance Thoughts, Speech, and Actions Other Characters Narrator’s Comments
Physical Appearance What does the character look like? What are his/her expressions, gestures, or body language?
Thoughts, Feelings, and Actions What does the character think, say, or do? How does the character treat others? What is important to the character?
Other Characters How do other characters react to the character? What do people think or say about the character?
Narrator’s Comments What does the narrator say about the character? Does the narrator like or dislike the character?
Questions What is the difference between a main and minor character? Which method of characterization is most effective, in your opinion?
Connection to Your Book Name the main character(s) in your book. Name a few of the minor characters in your book. What does the main character look like? What does the main character say or do? How do other characters react to the main character? Explain what the narrator says about the main character.
