  1. CricketSat LP Calibration Procedure Mike Fortney University of Vermont

  2. CricketSat Calibration Steps • Choose three wide ranging temperature sources (environments) • Gather necessary materials • Place CricketSat sensor with along calibrated thermometer into environment • Measure CricketSat tone burst delay interval for each temperature environment • Enter data into a spreadsheet program • Produce a conversion chart for flight use

  3. Environmental Sources • Warmest: ~ 25 C • Indoors • Outdoor shade • ~ 16 second delay • Cold: ~ 7 C • Refrigerator • ~ 21 second delay • Very Cold: ~ -15 C • Refrigerator freezer or chest freezer • ~ 36 second delay

  4. Materials • CricketSat LP temperature sensor • CricketSat receiver or UHF ham radio • Calibrated thermometer to be used as a reference • Lowest mass thermometers allow quickest stabilization and readings • Stopwatch (0.1 second resolution or better) • Usually available on digital watches • Pad of paper and pen for recording values

  5. Measure Tone Burst Delay • Turn on the CricketSat sensor and radio receiver • CricketSat receiver needs no tuning • If using ham receiver, tune around 434 MHz to find CricketSat signal • Place CricketSat sensor and thermometer into the new temperature environment • Place sensors in close proximity of each other, preferably touching. • Allow temperature to stabilize on both temperature sensing devices • Measure and record the time interval for tone bursts and the corresponding temperature • For best accuracy, measure delay in tenths of seconds or better • Perform multiple measurements at this temperature

  6. Spreadsheet Data Entry • Enter data into a spreadsheet as shown to the right • Multiple measurements can be seen for the three temperature source environments • Place the data in order of coldest source to warmest source

  7. Producing the Chart • Select the two columns of data and produce a chart • Add a trend line to best fit the data • May require a higher-order polynomial fit • Adjust the axes to maximize the data region • Print out a full page chart for field use
