  2. COMPONENTS OF THE ORAL EVALUATION KIT • ORAL EXAM CARD SET (10 CARDS) • ORAL PRODUCTION RUBRIC (ONE WORKSHEET FOR EA. STUDENT) • TEACHER KEY GUIDELINES Coordinators will be responsible for preparing the oral evaluation kits and making sure each teacher receives one. Envelopes should be numbered and assigned to a teacher. Teachers should return the kit to the coordinator after the evaluation.

ORAL EXAM TEACHER KEY GUIDELINES • Before giving the oral evaluation become familiar with the aspects of speaking that the evaluation measures (comprehension, fluency, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation). • Tell the Ss that they are going to have an oral evaluation. Explain that the goal is to answer questions and talk about the topics in the unit(s). • From a matching card set give one card to student A and one card to student B. Ss select one topic from the card. If Ss can’t decide on a topic the teacher may use the card to select one for them. Ss will have one minute of preparation time during which they may take notes. • Using the directed questions students proceed to initiate a dialogue about the selected topic. Ss should take turns asking different questions and then wait for his/her partner to speak about the stated topic. • Students should be indicated to use complete sentences and speak as clearly and correctly as possible. Teachers should not grade their own students.

QUALITATIVE ASPECTS OF ORAL SPEECH PRODUCTION • Comprehension = ability to understand questions and respond appropriately • Fluency = ability to speak quickly, naturally, and without many pauses • Grammar = ability to use correct grammar and sentence structures • Vocabulary = ability to understand and use vocabulary words and phrases • Pronunciation = ability to use correct stress, rhythm, and intonation patterns

  5. ORAL PRODUCTION RUBRIC (cont.) • Assign each S a number from 0 to 4 for each of the five areas. Reserve 0 for Ss who fail to take the quiz. Using this system, a maximum score of 20 points is possible by adding scores in each area. (Please note all levels after Basic 1 have a maximum score of 30pts. Ss will be assigned a number from 1 to 5. This change will affect all future scoring rubrics.) • In addition to a numeric score, it’s very important to provide Ss with written comments, including positive feedback. Praise Ss on their strengths and suggest areas for improvement. • As Ss are assessed based on what is taught in a particular unit, they could get the maximum score on the oral quiz. This suggests that a S has mastered the content, structures, and vocabulary specific to that unit. Although some aspects of language (e.g., pronunciation) are not unit-specific, the scores should be based on the kind of speech and communication modeled in the unit.
