  3. Digestive System Test Notes ISN 63 3 Functions: • To breakdown food into nutrients that can be use by the body. • To absorb the nutrients so they can be used for energy, growth, and maintenance • To rid the body of solid waste. Made up of 10 organs (primary & secondary)

  4. ISN 65 • ORGANS of Digestive Sys: • Mouth: • begins breaking down food into small pieces through mechanical and chemical digestion. • Saliva in the mouth causes chemical digestion • Chewing with teeth is mechanical.

  6. ISN 65 • 2. Esophagus: • Muscular transport tube for food; from mouth to stomach.

  7. ISN 67 Stomach: Continues chemical and mechanical digestion. Stomach secretes acids for chemical and has contracting muscles for mechanical.

  9. ISN 67 • 4. Small Intestines: • Around 20 feet long • 1 inch diameter • Most of the chemical digestion takes place & • Nutrients are absorbed into the blood.

  10. ISN 67 • 5. Large Intestines: • Also called Colon • 5 feet long • 2-3 inches diameter • Absorbs water from food into blood stream. • Prepares the undigested food matter for elimination. (makes it more solid)

  11. ISN 69 6. Rectum- 8 inch long cavity that holds solid waste until it is eliminated Anus. 7. Anus - opening at end of digestive system. Solid waste leaves body.

  12. ISN 71 Secondary Digestive System: • Liver : Produces bile that is used by small intestines to break up fat particles. • Gallbladder: Storage site for extra bile. • Pancreas: Produces additional digestive juices for the small intestines. Also produces Insulin.

Diseases of the Digestive System ISN 73 Diabetes: a disease that results in the glucose level of the blood being higher than the normal range. • caused by a persons inability to either produce or use properly insulin. • Diabetes can lead to kidney disease or heart disease, or even vision problems.
