The Need for Change • Increase the percentage of inmates working by expanding opportunities of prison industry through private sector competition. • Vision: Employ at least 10% of inmates in paid inmate labor programs no later than 2012.
NOTE: In 1976, the Legislature appropriated $11 million to expand the prison industries program to 2,000 workstations (when Florida had 20,000 inmates).
Correctional Industries:Focusing on the Fundamentals • Anti-Recidivism – Reinforce relevant education, training, and post-release job placement. • Security – Reduce of idleness of inmates. • Saving Taxpayers – Reduce costs of state government by reducing future recommitments. • Public Safety – Reduce future victimization of Floridians through proven rehabilitative methods.
