The Blitz • The city of London was bombed by the Luftwaffe for 57 consecutive nights and many towns and cities across the country followed. • Other important military and industrial centres such as Glasgow, Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Coventry, Liverpool, Manchester, Portsmouth, Plymouth , Swansea & Southampton also suffered heavy air attacks and high numbers of casualties.

  4. Why did the Blitz start? • The Blitz started when German bombs missed their target and hit many innocent people. • The PM( Neville Chamberlin) ordered a bombing raid on Berlin the Nazi capital • HITLER got revenge on Britain by bombing, the people instead of the military areas.

  5. AIR RAIDS & SHELTER Anderson shelter. Many people hid in Anderson shelters during air raids. ARW!

  6. Blackouts Black outs help to hide the big cities from German bombs . In the black out people had to cover their windows with blankets and turn their light out.

  7. Barrage balloons If a plane flew in to a barrage balloons the plane would explode. Barrage balloons were used to force plane higher in the air and make bombs less accurate. If a planes wing hit the razor wire holding the barrage balloon it would chop the wing off.

  8. Gas masks • The people of Britain wore gas masks to survive German gas attacks.

  9. ARP wardens • Arp wardens help clean up deviated cities. • Made shore people got in to shelter.

  10. V1 (DOODLEBUGS) • V1s were the first non piloted bombs.

  11. V2 • V2 flew faster than the speed of sound.

  12. Evacuation • Evacuation is when all the children in the cities which were being bomb; were sent to the country side.
