Levels of Assessment • Course – measures student learning upon completion of a particular course • Program – measures student learning upon completion of a particular degree or certificate • General Education – measures what the college expects students to know and be able to do upon completion of an A.A. or A.S. degree
Assessment as a Three-step Process • Define student learning outcomes (already done if they are contained in the COR or PLOs – do they need editing?) • Determine whether, and to what extent, students can perform or apply these outcomes • Use the information to make improvements in instruction and learning (if improvements are deemed needed)
Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges SLO Assessment Rubric • Student learning outcomes and authentic assessment are in place for courses, programs, and degrees • Results of assessment are being used for improvement and further alignment of institution-wide practices • There is widespread dialogue about the results • Decision-making includes dialogue on the results of assessment and is purposefully directed toward improving student learning
Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges SLO Assessment Rubric • Appropriate resources continue to be allocated and fine-tuned • Comprehensive assessment reports exist and are completed on a regular basis • Course student learning outcomes are aligned with degree student learning outcomes • Students demonstrate awareness of goals and purposes of courses and programs in which they are enrolled
Benefits for part-time faculty – Contract MOA • SLO assessment “shall not be used as a criterion of evaluation” • Attend workshop on a one-time basis ($50) • $50 for each different course level assessment report submitted within one year of attendance at the workshop; a total of two reports from two different courses may be submitted for payment for a maximum compensation of $100 • Assessment Report is required for each submission
Course Student Learning Outcomes(SLOs) Example: ADJ – S1A
Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) Example: Administration of Justice – Law Enforcement
Some Direct Assessment Methods • Culminating Projects • In-class Presentations • Writing Assignments • Exams • Portfolios • Videos
Mapping PLOs to SLOs Example: Paralegal Studies
