  1. OBSERVATION, INFERENCE AND PREDICTIONS How are these things used in science?

  2. OBSERVATION • Using your 5 senses to gather information from the world around you. • A noting and recording of…. FACTS!!! • Observation: Using your five senses to gather information…sight, touch, hearing, taste, and smell Ex: ) The fruit is sticky and orange in color

  3. TWO TYPES OF OBSERVATION • QUALITATIVE: L= letters. Descriptions such as color, odor, sounds, etc. Example: The green plant. • QUANTITATIVE: N = numbers. Measurement or quantity (counting) Example: The plant grew 2cm in a week.

  4. INFERENCE • Inference: A logical explanation of what happened…based on your observations. An inference is correct as long as it makes sense!! Ex: ) An apple core sits on the plate besides Dexter. He finishes wiping his hands and puts a napkin on a plate…What can you INFER?

  5. PREDICTION • A prediction is a guess about what will happen in the future. In science your prediction can also be called a hypothesis. • Ex:) If I test drive a Kia optima, a Nissan maxima and a Chrysler 300 then I think the Kia will have better gas mileage. ( The underlined part is the part of the hypothesis that is the prediction.)

  6. Directions: • Look at the following pictures and follow your teachers directions to write either an observation, inference or prediction about each one.

  11. O, I, or P? • 4. It is a cloudy day. It is going to rain.

  12. O, I, or P? • 5. The girl standing in the checkout line at target has on a white collared shirt and blue pants. She must be a Beck student.
