Art with a Purpose • Just like classic authors, many artists create their pieces with a strong purpose or message in mind. • Often, works of art mirror works of literature from a specific culture or era. • As you observe the following artistic pieces, pay close attention to details that will lead you to discover the author’s message. • Use those details to make inferences about the piece.

Artist’s choices • Today we will cover some basic art terms and their impact on the meaning and aesthetics of a piece of non-print media.
Line • Lines can have connotation. • Straight make us think of buildings = strong and powerful • Curvy lines are associated with living things = soft, delicate, or graceful • Jagged lines suggest objects like broken glass, sawteeth, or lightning= aggressive or wild.
Line • Movement: Lines can imply movement • Straight= rigid or swift • Curved= relaxed or graceful • Jagged= nervous or awkward • Direction • Vertical= strong • Horizontal=calm or stable • Diagonal= unstable
