  4. A LtW learner:John Blundell

  5. John Blundell • Senior design engineer at Alstom Power; • Wanted to develop within the company on the technical side; • The company needed complex problems investigating; • No ‘off the shelf’ courses were appropriate; • Wanted minimum time out of the job.

  6. What happened… John: • developed and ‘owned’ a unique programme; • High-level skills and knowledge and confidence; • MSc Combustion, Fuels & Performance Modelling; • Promoted to highest engineering grade in the company – 20% pay rise. Alstom • Up-skilled and highly motivated senior engineer; • Research projects – immediate business benefits; • Excellent value for money.

  7. The on-line learning content • Stand-alone pieces of content-based learning resource • Used by individuals or groups as ‘just in time’ learning content • Used to form the basis of credit rated modules – individually or ‘mixed and matched’ to suit a particular learner or group • A range of ‘generic’ titles developed specifically for work based learners…

  8. On-line learning content

  9. LtW –the re-development • Originally built (in 2001) as a pilot activity and has almost reached capacity • Built on technology that is becoming out-dated and we have little control of the site. • Architecture is fairly linear, the resources all accessed from the learning contract. • The look and feel is tired. • New platform - versatile, cutomisable, scalable web-based set of resources for WBL.
