L’échauffementComment puis-je étudier? What does it mean to “know” something in French? Give examples of how you “know you know” a word or phrase in French.

When I know something in French • I can say the English word from memory when I see the French word • I can say the French word from memory when I see the English word • I can spell the French word • I can use the French word correctly in a sentence and make any necessary changes so that it is grammatically correct.
Les Objectifs • Each student will be able to identify the different aspects of what it means to “know” something in French. • Each student will demonstrate understanding of how to reach each level of “knowing” • Each student will participate in an activity to practice the different levels of knowing and demonstrate an ability to collect data • Each student will judge the data and make a decision about how to move to the next level.
Step one • With flashcards or with a vocabulary list • Quiz yourself or have someone quiz you to see if you can SAY THE ENGLISH when you SEE OR HEAR THE FRENCH • Put words in three categories: • Je ne comprends pas (NON) • Plus oumoins • Je comprendsbien (OUI)
Step two • Collect the cards or return to the lists of words that are still in the categories • Je ne comprends pas • Plus oumoins • Repeat step one, until all of those cards have been moved to the “je comprends” pile. • It might mean you have to review some of the cards several times, until you have been able to get it right.
Step three • When all cards have been moved to the “je comprends” pile- meaning you can say them all in English when you see the French- then you can start step three. • Now, you will say the FRENCH when you SEE OR HEAR THE ENGLISH. • Once again, move them into three categories • Je comprends • Plus oumoins • Je ne comprends pas
You can move the cards physically into categories, or mark them with a pencil on the vocabulary list. • Words go into one of three categories: Je comprends Plus ouMoins Je ne comprends pas
Step Four • Continue moving the cards from the “je ne comprends pas” and “plus oumoins” categories into the “je comprends” category. • Once you have all the words where you can say them in French when you see the English, you can go to the next step. • This means that you are going to repeat the process again, this time SPELLING the French words.
Now repeat the process-Spelling Counts! • Words go into one of three categories: Plus ouMoins Je comprends Je ne comprends pas Je comprends
Step five • Once you have mastered the spelling, it is now time to try to write the word in a sentence and use it in context. On your own or with a partner, and without looking at the French to see how to write it, use each word in a sentence of your own creation. • When you are done, check your work (or have a teacher or friend check it). If there are any words you used incorrectly, return to them and practice more sentences.
Review of the 5 Step Process • Say the English when you see/hear the French • Say the French when you hear/see the English • Spell the French word • Use the French word in a sentence.
Ways to study • Flashcards by yourself • Flashcards with a friend • Word list folded in half (alone or with a friend) • White boards, groups of three where one person calls out the words and the others try to write the words. The person calling the words decides who wins and awards points.
Exit ticket • How did you study? • What skills did you master? • Did this study method work for you? • Why or why not? • What will you do differently at home when you study so that you will be more succesful? • OR What have you been doing that is working for you already?
