Applied to a master’s servants: • aParable: Luke 17:8— Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, and dress properly, and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink’? • acJohn 12:26— If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. • cJohn 2:5— His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” • cJohn 2:9— When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom

Applied to those who help fellow saints: • aHebrew Christians: Heb. 6:10— For God is not so unjust as to overlook your work and the love that you showed for his sake in serving the saints, as you still do. • bHousehold of Stephanas: 1 Cor. 16:15—Now I urge you, brothers—you know that the household of Stephanas were the first converts in Achaia, and that they have devoted themselves to the service of the saints— • bArchippus: Col. 4:17— And say to Archippus, “See that you fulfill the ministry that you have received in the Lord.”

Applied to Christians with a gift of service: • a1 Pet. 4:10-12—As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as [one who serves] by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. • bRom. 12:7— if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; • b1 Cor. 12:5—and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord;

Applied to the work of all Christians: • bEph. 4:12— to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, • bRev. 2:19— “‘I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance, and that your latter works exceed the first. • cMatt. 20:26— It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, • cparable: Matt. 22:13— Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. Applied to the Seven at Jerusalem: • aActs 6:2— And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.” • bActs 6:1— Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution.

  18. Applied to deacons: • a1 Tim. 3:10—And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. • a1 Tim. 3:13—For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus. • cPhil. 1:1— Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons: • c1 Tim. 3:8—Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued,  not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. • c1 Tim. 3:12—Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well.

  19. Questions • Should deacons be appointed only when there is a specific task to be done? • Is it proper simply to appoint deacons to have a scripturally organized church even if there is no specific task for the deacons? • Should deacons be viewed as a kind of junior elders, or elders in training?
