Garbage to Gems Group 5 Bushra, Sahana and Drew
Bendy Tube • Blue and yellow vertical lines • Can stretch or shrink to a limit • Very lightweight • Hollow, holes at both ends • Is possible to see through the holes • 1. This could be used to focus on certain small areas by looking through the ends • 2. This might have been to pour liquid into small containers. Pour in the liquid and it would go straight through. The bendy bit was to make it longer to reach both containers. Bushra
Writing String • Many different colours inside black tube • Very bendy • Colours include black, green, grey, red, blue, brown, orange and yellow • Description along one side • Round • Inside each tube is metal wire • 1. The pointed ends left a mark when rubbed so it might have been used for writing. Sahana
Pinkie Bag • Writing in different languages on back • Little plastic case on front • Underneath yellow paper is white paper • Very crinkly and bent • Paper ripped • 1. This could have been used to hold small objects. There is a hole at the top, which is just the perfect size to hold it with your pinkie. The plastic would have been to protect and hold everything. Maybe the bag got ripped because something too heavy was placed in it. Drew
Moracoco • Body bright yellow • Metal ring that hangs from finger • Plastic top unscrews • Inside two skinny tubes • Little silver bowl, in middle there is glass bump • 1. This might have been as a musical instrument. When you shake it up and down it makes a rattling noise because of a metal ring connected to it. • 2. It might have also hung from a necklace. Something would have been threaded through the metal ring to make it hang. Bushra
Medical Box • Nine sides of different sizes • Little flaps open up to hollow middle • Box crinkled and out of shape • Collapsible • Very lightweight and portable • Lots of writing, probably instructions to use • 1. This can be used to store first aid items for emergencies, this is probably an empty leftover from the disaster and the items inside are most likely lost. This could have stored items like bandages, band-aids, disinfectants, antiseptics and other emergency tools. Sahana
Scraper • Fits comfortably in hand • Two different parts fit together • Been broken off something else • Can see reflections in plastic • Grey in colour • Can cause pain • 1. The cracked end could have been used as a back scratcher. Or as a weapon to gouge into skin. Drew
Whacker • Writing in two languages • Picture of food • Background red • Opens up, four sides • Rectangular shape • 1. The whacker was possibly used to kill pests’ most likely flies that would swarm around the people on how summer days. This artifact could be wrapped into a roll and is very handy. The bright colors on the artifact are probably to attract the flies. Bushra
Bendy Apparatus • Thin, shiny metal • Pokey and sharp • Can be easily shaped • Can wind round in circles • Stuck on paper • Plastic case, to protect • 1. This could have been used to make jewelry. It is very thin so beads would fit easily. • 2. The apparatus also is very bendy so it might have been used to make different shapes of objects. Sahana
Musical Fanner and Case • Case is plain white • When waved make flapping sound • Inside plain white • One side, brown with circles • Stands up in triangle shape • 1. This artifact was probably used for fanning but also for music. It comes with a case to store the musical fanner. When you wave the fanner around it creates a fluttering noise, which could have been used for entertainment on occasions. This artifact could also have been used to cool people when the weather got warm in the summer. Drew
Strangler • Long and red • Strands wrapped together to keep strong • Can change shape easily • Bendy • Unbreakable with hands • Coarse material • 1. As a weapon you would sneak up behind someone, wrap it around his or her neck and pull hard on both ends. Effectively strangling the person. Bushra
