Dry vs. Moist Adiabatic Lapse Rate • Saturated • T = Td • Unsaturated • T > Td • What lapse rate do we use? • T = 56, Td = 50 • T = 16, Td = 10 • T = 10, Td = 10
Algebra Monster! • “Normal” or “Average” refers to a 30-year average • i.e. The average high temperature today is 58°F. • If the normal number of thunderstorms that occur each May is 10, how often do May thunderstorms occur each year?
Terminal Velocity • Maximum velocity that the object can attain as it falls • Important because the terminal velocity must be greater than the updraft velocity for precipitation to occur • Terminal Velocity (cm/sec) = 1750 * • Must convert cm/sec to mph • Example • Calculate the terminal velocity of a pea with a diameter of 1 cm. • Terminal Velocity = 1750 * • Terminal Velocity = 1750 cm/sec • 1750 (cm/sec) * 0.02236 = 39.1 mph
El Nino & La Nina • Oscillation in southeastern Pacific Ocean (off the coast of Peru) • El Nino: Warmer than average water temperature • La Nina: Colder than average water temperature
Ekman Transport • Ocean water is set in motion by the winds • Since the earth is rotating, the Coriolis Force is important • Bulk water moves 90° to the right of wind in the NH • Bulk water moves 90° to the left of wind in the SH
Hurricanes: Wind Velocity & Storm Surge! • Storm surge is cause by the wind; a wind-driven rush of sea into coastal areas as a strong tropical cyclone arrives • Greater wind velocity and wind direction toward shore results in stronger/higher storm surge, and that is found in the right front quadrant of the tropical cyclone • Where would the storm surge be the strongest/highest?
