History • The first recorded death sentence was in 1608. • Originally you could receive a death sentence for crimes other than murder as well. • There was a suspension of the death penalty from 1972 to 1976. • Since 1976 there have been a total of 1,263 executions. • Of those executed 25 of them were later found to be innocent.
