  3. Word Structure • The meaning of a word can be figured out by using the prefix, base word or suffix. • Example: The shot from the doctor was painless.

  4. Apposition • The word is followed by the definition, which is often set off by commas. • Example: The feline, or cat, was sleeping in the sun.

  5. Context Clues • Using other words in the sentence to figure out an unknown word. • Example: The canine barked and wagged his tail.
