Precision Electro-Polishing of Stainless Steel Optic Channels

Ensure smooth inner surface of optic channels, 2-3mm diameters inside stainless steel parts. R&D project to reduce needle diameter to 70 microns and remove burrs. Challenges in current regulation and handling micro parts were overcome using virtual current measurement and microscope-guided electro-polishing bath. Outcome: Tens of needles successfully treated.

  1. Ensuring smooth and free of burrs inner surface of configurated juncted optic channels of 2-3 mm diameters, drilled inside a massive stainless steel part. Short-Term R&D Project. Page 1 of 1 TEMPLATE TO BE REPLACED Part: Stainless Steel Eye Surgery Needle, Outer Diameter 90 microns, Inner Diameter 37 microns, length 2 mm Task: To reduce Outer Diameter to 70 microns and to clean the needle edge from burrs. The aim occurred unreachable by any other methods tried . Problems: 1.To measure and to regulate the working current within the range of 2-3 microamperes 2. To handle a part of micro dimensions Solutions: 1.The current measure was carried out virtually, by calculation based on current field distribution inside the electrolyte. 2. Under microscope manipulated electro-polishing bath was installed for the purpose Results: The task was reached and tens needle were successfully treated and used in lab and clinical experiments Before electropolish: Outer Diameter 90 microns, burrs on the edge After electropolish: Outer Diameter 70 microns, no burrs
