SMART-WAY– an awarded European navigation • Participation of eight European organizations from five EC member states (Three of them from Germany) • Developed within 24 month in an EC- funded research project • Budget of ~ 2.4 million Euros • Addressing medium to large cities with complex transport networks • Pilotings in Dresden, Germany and Turin, Italy, implemented in practice in 2012

Idea Destination Spontaneousaccess Get off at POI Start Imagine being in a foreign city, getting on the first tram or bus on your way, and being guided to your destination through the public transport network – by your own Smartphone! Disturbanceon the route Alternative route
Technical Facts • Suitable for mobile platform Android • Interface for • text messages • maps • GPS, WAAS, EGNOS, (Galileo)… • Real time data • Motion Detection Improvesthemonitoringofthe navigationprocessbydetecting typicalmotionpatterns • Walking • Sitting / Standing • Speedup / Slowdownofvehicles
How does it work? • User finds an adequate route by entering a starting point or using current location • Navigation process starts, important points (interchanges, exit stops) are signalized by vibration • Unrestricted freedom of the user to interrupt the trip, new route is calculated • Up-to-date information of delays, early arrivals and disturbances
Advantages • Transport authorities • Address car drivers and shift modal shift towards pt • Higher satisfaction of travelers and lowering barriers to use pt • Independent of global players (google), individually adaptable to every pt-operator • Travelers • Free choice of mode of transportation • Spontaneous access to vehicles • Never get lost • Lowering barriers to use public transport modes • Continuously and increasing app-usage after roll out • Positive feedback and interaction by piloting users
Successes so far Awarded as GHTC 2012 The award ceremony on 5 March in Delhi, India, where Dr. Matthias J. Hack, German Federal Ministry of Education and Research handed over the award
Successes so far • Continuously and increasing app- • usage after roll out • Technology shortly before break- • through to Europe • Positive feedback and inter- • action by piloting users
Prospects • Fraunhofer IVI and TAF are interested to continue the lighthouse-project successfully with attention to establish an european uniform LBS-solution for pt-operators (including long-distance traffic) • collaboration with the Czech Ministry of Transport and other countries/authorities to implement • SMART-Way in large urban networks • e.g. in Czech • Complete integration of Indoor- and • WIFI-Location, iBEACON • Smart-Way is open for integration • into existing applications
Next intended activities • Operation in Germany • International activities • Integration of e-ticketing • Integration in existing navigation) application and bridging to other transportmodes • Expand Smart-Way to iOS platform • Implementation in European wide dimension within the easy.GO App
Next intended activities: way to intermodality • Car navigation app, which is used in directory services, such as Yellow – and White Pages • Available on all major platforms (iOS, Android BlackBerry, etc.) • maps available for Germany, Austria, Swiss , Western Europe • Customized adjustments possible • API third-party applications integration via API
