Strategies that Work From Child nutrition programs across the state
Other Proven Ideas Searcy Special School District – conducts taste tests and focus groups Cave City – teaches Child Nutrition regulations to FACS classes and then the students create a menu that follows the guidelines for a grade. Child Nutrition incorporates their menus if possible. Searcy County School District – set-up a booth in the cafeteria during Open House that showed the amounts of fat, salt, and sugar in common fast foods Blytheville – invited the media to see what school lunch is really about
Other Proven Ideas Bismark – invited the media to see their Farm to School program Hope – encourages fruits and vegetables through a Wizard of Oz skit at the beginning of school. The superintendent is the Wizard! Fayetteville – huge Breakfast in the Classroom program Drew Central – has a great social media presence (posted great pictures of the kitchen renovations as they happened)
Great Ideas! • Invite the high school football team or cheerleaders to eat lunch with your elementary and middle schools • Advertise great things that happen in the cafeteria… • Ms. Moore was just promoted to Director! • Ms. Smith completed Manager Training this summer! • The cafeteria has new floors! • Invite parents, grandparents and youth group leaders to lunch • Invite City Council and Quorum Court members to lunch • Invite administration to lunch…advertise the “Principal’s Choice” menu (maybe his favorite meal is Chicken Spaghetti)
High School - Harder to Reach? Get them involved! – Jerry’s Cafeteria Make-over! Invite the Student Body President to serve in the cafeteria line or greet students at the front of the line Social Media – check your district’s policy Taste testing – give everyone a small sample with their tray and then monitor feedback and waste Let them add the final touches (bagel bars, oatmeal bars, open vegetable bars… give them the basics and let them add to their own trays…has worked in several schools) Grab and Go – especially when they have meetings or extra-curricular activities during lunch
