  2. 1940s: Yugoslavia was led by Josip Broz Tito, who names himself President for life and doesn’t align with the Soviet Union Tito’s Rule • Tito’s dictatorshipkeeps all of the different ethnic groups in check – forcing them to work together as Yugoslavians • 1980s: After Tito’s death ethnic & cultural tensions grow • 1991: As communism falls in E. Europe, parts of Yugoslavia begin to declare independence based on ethnicity, language and religion

Ethnic Cleansing in Yugoslavia • 1991: War breaks in Slovenia & Croatia, Serb led Yugoslav army tries to stop their independence, Serbs defeated in both wars • 1991: Macedonia declares independence, but Serbs don’t fight it • 1995: Bosnia wants independence, Radovan Karadžić leads Bosnian Serbs against Bosnian Muslims, starts ethnic cleansing, UN steps in • 1998: Muslims in Yugoslav province Kosovo want independence • Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic begins a ethnic cleansing against Muslims in Kosovo • UN intervenes again to stop the genocide • 1999: Kosovo comes under control of the UN • 2006: Serbia & Montenegro split ending Yugoslavia • 2008: Kosovo declares independence, Serbiathreatensforce Russia vetoes
