At Networking Events • Present yourself as a professional • Have a free hand at receptions • Have business cards handy and organized • Decide who you want to approach • Be respectful of people’s time • “Who else should I talk to?” • Don’t put people on the spot • Don’t take things personally
Following Up With Contacts • Make notes about new contacts • Follow up with them soon after you’ve met • Keep up with people in your network • Contact them when you don’t need something from them
Informational Interviews • Ask for a few minutes of the person’s time • Prepare ahead of time • Briefly introduce yourself & explain your interest • Ask open-ended questions • Mind your manners • Ask for referrals • Afterwards, write a thank you note

Networking Activity • Divide everyone into 2 groups (A and B) • “A” people will get a “B” name. • Find your partner, shake hands • Exchange elevator speeches • Continue conversation until time is called • Repeat • Group B: please go into next room or hallway
Remember… • Networking doesn’t have to be hard or scary • Practice makes it easier • It’s okay to make mistakes • Over time your network with grow and you’ll become better connected • Be yourself and have fun
