  2. What is a hero? • List qualities of a hero: • Brave • Determined • Loyal • Trusting • Dedicated • Selfless • Focus • Sacrifice • Leader • Morals • Ambitious • Courageous

  3. Our Definition • Someone who displays an act of courage and is determines to accomplish challenging deeds and they are admired for that deed by others. Superheroes Regular people

  4. Types of Heroes • Heroes that are forced into situations without preparation • Jump into the unknown • Thrown into the adventure • Come back changes

  5. Types of heroes • Destined to be a hero • Sees his or her purpose • Has time to prepare • Ready for the challenge • Often already expected to do greatness

  6. Achilles

  7. What heroic actions did Achilles take? • Achilles own super power was his invulnerability from being dipped into the River of Styx, but his heel was not covered • Known as the strongest warrior on the Greek side • Even though he was destined for death, he went into the war as the strong warrior he was and fought of his people • Without Achilles, the Greeks were at a huge disadvantage • Achilles eventually defeated his biggest enemy, Hector, giving the Greeks the upper end in the war • Lead his people to the defeat of Troy • Died fighting for his troops freedom from the war

How is Achilles a hero? • Brave: Went into war knowing he was going to die • Determined: wants to destroy anyone who did him or his people wrong and end the war with the Greeks as the winners • Sacrificial: sacrificed his life in battle for the Greeks and risked his life to kill as many Trojans as possible • Ambitious: desire to kill Hector, the most powerful Trojan, and succeeded and as a result Greece gained control in war

What heroic actions did Telemachos take? • He sacrificed his life to find and help his father, the leader of Ithaca • Goes to find Odysseus for his mother’s sake • Rarely backs down from a challenge he is faced with • Even though told not to go by his maid/servant and indirectly his mother, Telemachos holds his ground and is determined to retrieve his father. • Stands in front of the suitors telling them what he is planning to do and goes through with his plans regardless of the negative inputs he received. • Over takes the suitors

  11. How is Telemachos a hero? • Determined to get his father back • Loyal to his family • Sacrifices his life for his father’s life and his mother’s happiness • Leads his troops to rescue a very important person, Odysseus • Courageous when deciding to leave home and venture into the unknown
