AsiaFI (Asia Future Internet Forum) Activities Jun Bi Secretariat Director Asia Future Internet Forum Oct. 20th, 2008
Contents • Why Future Internet • Asia Future Internet Forum • Conclusion
Future Internet- Why? • The Internet is successful but the architecture is too old (1969-1982-2008) • Issues of the current Internet Architecture • Scalability • Security • Mobility • QoS • IETF tried to fix based on the current architecture, but not so successful
How to Resolve the problems ? • Two Approaches • Evolutionary Approach Short term • Revolutionary Approach Long term, 15-20 years • Three Steps • Develop Component Technologies • Put them into one Architecture • Experiment in Large Scale
Future Internet Projects in US/EU • US • FIND (Future Internet Design), 2006- • GENI (Global Environment for Network Innovations), 2005- • Europe • FIRE (Future Internet Research and Experimentation), 2007- • EuroNF/EuroFGI, 2007-
Future Internet Projects in CJK • China • CNGI+ (China Next Generation Internet), 2003- • 973 New Generation Internet Architecture, 2003- • Japan • WIDE (Widely Integrated Distributed Environment), 1988- (Prof. ESAKI) • AKARI (Design a New Generation Internet), 2006- • Korea • FIF (Future Internet Forum), 2006-
AsiaFI • Asia Future Internet Forum (AsiaFI) was founded to coordinate R&D on Future Internet among Asia counties as well as with other continents. • The 1st Preparation Meeting, Seoul July,2007 • The 2nd Preparation Meeting, Xi’An, Aug,2007 • The 3rd Preparation Meeting, Seoul, Nov, 2007 • The Interim Board and Steering Group was elected in Dec. 2007 • The 1st General Meeting, Hawaii, Jan, 2008 • The bylaw is approved in April, 2008 • The Board and Steering Group for the term 2008-2010 is elected in May, 2008 • The 2nd General Meeting, Seoul, June, 2008 • www.AsiaFI.net
AsiaFI • General Assembly • Board: Chair Hualin Qian • Steering Group: Chair Kilnam Chon • Working Groups • to study on specific topics • Architecture WG • Mobile/Wireless Networks WG • Committees • to coordinate on specific activities • Education Committee • Testbed Committee • Event Committee • Secretariat • Director, Staff
AsiaFI • Countries: from CJK to 8 • Institutions: ~40 • Participants: ~100 • Mobile School(Jan) Architecture School(Aug) • Countries: 4 7 • Participants:63 55 • Professors/Researchers: 45 30 • Students: 18 25 • Lecturers: 14 20 • Student presentations: 18 14 • Tutorials Participants: 133 175
AsiaFI • Architecture WG • Objective • gather the experience from current future Internet projects • bring out the requirements • discuss principles for Future Internet architecture design • layout the engineering of a new architecture. • Scope • Routing, Forwarding, Addressing, ID and location • Network management • Trust/Security management • Service and application management
AsiaFI • Mobile/Wireless Networks WG • Establishes a forum for Wireless and Network Mobility researchers to investigate key problems in the field for the future internet. • Establishes a uniform testbed that researchers could use for experimentation as common tools, scenarios and methodologies. A more ambitious, longer-term goal is to become a catalyst for research in Mobile/ Wireless Inter-networking for the future Internet. • Scope • Problems Statement • Secure and fast handover, route optimization • Wireless Mesh architecture • Ad hoc network • Mobile/Wireless testbed sub-WG • To work closely with Testbed Committee -
AsiaFI • Testbed Committee • Survey the facilities which are currently available or which will be available • Investigate the users requirements • Coordinate the federation of the testbeds • Wired testbed sub-WG • Planet Lab sub-WG
AsiaFI • Event Committee • Conferences and workshops hosted by AsiaFI (and other orgs) • The International Conference on Future Internet (Seoul, June, 2008) • The 1st Workshop on Testbed (Jeju, Aug. 2008) • AsiaFI workshop on Fundamental Issues on Future Internet Architecture (Qingdao, Oct. 2008) • The CJK joint Workshop on Advanced Network (QingDao, Oct. 2008) • The 3rd Africa-Asia Collaboration Meeting (Cairo, Nov 2008) • Joint Africa-Asia Workshop, (Addis Ababa, Nov 2008) • APAN-AsiaFI joint workshop on Future Internet for the Other Billions (Kaohsiung, March 2009) • Joint Africa-Asia Workshop (Cairo, May 2009) • The International Conference on Future Internet (Seoul, June 2009) • The 1st Workshop on Security and Trust in the Future Internet, (SAINT 2009, Seattle, Aug 2009) - pending
AsiaFI • Education Committee • Ph.D. Program • Coordinate sharing Ph.D thesis committee among member institutions of AsiaFI • Visiting program • long-term(1 or 2 semesters) visits of Ph.D students as well as short-term visits among the AsiaFI member institutions as well as cooperative institutions in other continents • Semester-long courses • Introduction to the Future Internet (Spring semester, Tsinghua Univ.) • AsiaFI Winter/Summer School on • Wireless/Mobility (Seoul, Jan 2008, Seoul) • Architecture (Aug 2008, Jeju) • Wireless/Mobility (Jan 2009, Beijing) • Architecture (Aug 2009, Jeju) • Wireless/Mobility (Jan 2010, Tokyo) • Tutorials • Tutorials on Security/Trust (June 2008, Seoul) • Tutorials on Architecture (Aug. 2008, Jeju)
AsiaFI • Research • AsiaFI plans to coordinate joint research among Asian countries as well as with countries in other continents.
Conclusion • Future Internet: Challenges and Opportunities • AsiaFI from CJK to Asia • We may put high priority on graduate education at AsiaFI in order to develop the next generation researchers for future internet (long term research) • We may look into fair share on open research on the future internet.
