WHY DAM THE COLORADO RIVER? BROUGHT TO YOU BY BRANDON DOZIER
QUALITY H20 • In the western United States water is scarce long periods without rain can cause rivers to dry up, limiting the supply of water. Construction of the dam was required to hold back some of the river's water and store enough to meet drinking water and agriculture needs through a dry season. • Floods during early spring destroy lives, crops, and property.
HYDROELECTRIC POWER • The amount of water released through the dam is directly related to the demand for electricity from the power plant. When more electricity is needed, more water is released. • The Colorado River Basin Storage Control Project can generate 1,813 megawatts of hydropower
TOURISM • Before construction of Dams there were few visitors due to difficulty to reach water that required long drives over rough roads or days of hiking. • Tourism is now the main source of income in the area.
