1. A Boy Striving to be Different: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Written By Mark Twain
2. Huck vs. Miss Watson Miss Watson is a sophisticated religious women, who would like to teach Huck her ways and further his education
Huck does not want to be civilized, he would like to be independent and live life his own way
“ ‘Don’t gap and stretch like that, Huckleberry- why don’t you try to behave?’ Then she told me all about the bad place, and I said I wished I was there.” (Twain, 2)
3. Pap vs. Society Pap is a homeless, drunken, abuser. Also he is Huck’s father. He is continuously thrown in jail for his inappropriate antics.
Pap doesn’t want to live like everyone else. Throughout this novel he has various opportunities to get cleaned up, yet he always goes back to his unethical ways of life.
Society views Pap as worthless
“And he said people allowed there’d be another trial to get me away from him and give me to the widow for my guardian, and they guessed it would win, this time.” ( Twain, 18)
The previous quote illustrates how society doesn’t view Pap as a fit parent for Huck, because of his life style.
4. Miss Watson vs. Jim Miss Watson decides to sell Jim to a family in New Orleans for a great deal of money.
Jim does not want to be sent to New Orleans because his whole family lives with Miss Watson. Moving to New Orleans would mean leaving his family behind.
The thought of permanently being separated from his loved ones forces Jim to runaway, and do things on his own, so he can come back and free them later.
5. Huck vs. Tom Sawyer When Huck and Tom are trying to free Jim Tom wants to do everything by the book, even if it means making everything more complicated.
Huck wants to do things the simplest way possible. He doesn’t want to do it the way its “supposed” to be done, he just wants to get it done as efficiently as possible to ensure Jim’s freedom.
Huck shows more qualities of an individualist then Tom.
Tom likes to do things the way he has seen them done, Huck likes to do things his own way.
6. Shooting of Boggs and The Circus Incident Comparing
Society gangs up on one person. (Boggs, the store manager, and the drunk man at the circus.)
Society follows the lead of an individual before even considering other ideas themselves
Huck is the only one to think of other’s safety.
Contrasting
At the circus the danger was fake, and at the shooting of Boggs it was very real.
The crowd got mad at the store owner for shooting Boggs, but they didn’t get mad at the circus workers for letting the drunk man ride the horse, even though to their knowledge people were in danger in both situations.
Individualism
Huckleberry, the immature uneducated child that society was trying to conform, was the only one concerned about the outcome of each situation. He refused to think as the crowd did and didn’t join in any of the taunting or behaviors of the audience. His individualistic ideals showed through his actions once again.
7. Huck Saving The Robbers and Huck Turning in Jim Compare
Huck gets to decide whether or not to save a life or end it
Decides to save others in both situations
He went with his own gut
Lied to save them
Contrast
What society told him and what he considered right was the same with the robbers, yet different with Jim
Individualism
In both of these circumstances Huck is faced with a choice, to save lives or to let people die. Huck always chose to save the lives of the other men because he felt that it was the right thing to do. Even though the situation with Jim no one would have agreed with his choice, but Huck chose to save him anyways and not turn him in. He even said he would go to Hell rather than turn Jim in because in his heart he knew it was what he needed to do.

12. Connection Individualism Views: Individualism is an extremely important part of every day life. Every single day people are faced with decisions they have to make. Sometimes these decisions can be very difficult especially if peer pressure is involved. Without individualism a person wouldn’t be able to say no, and that can get someone into a lot of trouble. It’s critical that people be individualistic, that way they can stand up for what is right, and turn down what is wrong.
13. Connections Part Two Views of Individualism: Individualism is a seemingly self explanatory term with a very complicated meaning that can differ from person to person. Individualism is the concept of everyone doing what they please, thinking what they please, and believing in what they please. Individualist are free-thinkers, not just following a group opinion but forming there own and refusing to conform to any other. Without individualism the world would be a very different and plain place to live. The different ideas and actions of people is what gets things accomplished and keeps things exciting. If individualism and it’s characteristics were to disappear life would no longer be fun to live.
