ICS 131: Social Analysis of Computerization Lecture 19: Robotics & Autonomy
Announcements • Don’t forget to vote!
Announcements • Final exam will be open book. • No electronics.
Course Evaluation • Online • 7pm Fri 6/2/2006 through 11:59pm Sun 6/11/2006 • I imagine you will be reminded repeatedly via email until you fill it out.
Key Idea • Autonomous systems such as software agents and robots are becoming more common in the world around us. These systems will significantly change the way in which people live their lives and interact with each other.
AI • Intelligence (m-w.com): the ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or trying situations • Intelligence (another possible definition): the set of behaviors that people can do that machines can’t.
Autonomous Agents • E-commerce • Entertainment • Education • Network routing
Robot • From the Czech word “robota” - compulsory labor • Karel Capek’s play “Rossum’s Universal Robots” (written 1920, translated 1923)
Robots • Social Partners • Industrial Tools • Military Actors • Social Actors
Robots as Social Partners • Kismet • Video
Robots as Social Partners • Kismet • Video • What featuresmake themwell suitedfor this role?
Robots as Industrial Tools • Car painting robots, etc.
Robots as Military Actors • Mine-sniffing robots • SWORDS
Robots as Social Actors • Feral Robotic Dogs
Other Roles of Robots and Autonomous Systems? • Entertainment • Health Care • House Cleaning • Others?
The Morality of Robots • “Bicentennial Man,” “I, Robot,” “The Terminator,” etc. • How is it the same as or different from the morality of humans?
Conclusion • Autonomous systems such as robots are finding their way into many aspects of life. The people who design the brains and bodies of these entities will help to determine the impact that they will have.
Topic for Discussion • Marvin Minsky believes that working in robotics is a waste of time until autonomous behavior works well in simulation. Rod Brooks believes that many of the hard problems in autonomous behavior will only become apparent when the entity is physically embodied in robotic form. • Please consider which should come first, the sim or the ‘bot. • Discuss with neighbors - 5 minutes.
Today’s discussants are... …come on down front!
Second Topic for Discussion • ICS switched from paper forms to UCI’s online system for student evaluations of its courses. • Questions: • What are the benefits and disadvantages of paper forms and the online system to the students? To the faculty/administration? • Discuss with neighbors - 5 minutes.
Last group of discussants are... …and anyone who hasn’t gone yet …come on down front!
