The Bastille • The Bastille was a fortress in Paris, known formerly as Bastille Saint Antoine. It played a important role in the internal conflict of France. Louis XIV used the Bastille primarily as a prison for upper-class members of French society who had opposed or angered him including, after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, French Protestants. From 1659 onwards, the Bastille's primary role was as a state penitentiary and by 1789 a total of 5,279 prisoners had come through the fortress. Under Louis XV and XVI, the Bastille's focus shifted and it was used to detain prisoners from an increasingly wide range of backgrounds, and to support the operations of the Parisian police, especially in enforcing government censorship of the printed media
Why it was built • For most of its history it was used as a state prison by the kings of France. The Bastille was built in response to the English threat to the city Paris during the Hundred Years Wars.
The End of the Bastille • Almost nothing is left of the Bastille except the remains of stone foundation, which were relocated to Boulevard Henri IV. Historians were deeply critical of the Bastille in the 19th century.
