The Students Expect Diversity (Age, maturity, culture, experience, knowledge, and ability!) • High School Students, Grades 9-11 • 0-2 years H.S. Chemistry) • Current Enrollment: 12 • Students from all over the world (e.g., Greece, Korea, and Saudi Arabia) • Future MTU students?
Lecture and Experiments • Two lectures scheduled in Room 106 (Room # not confirmed yet): * Morning: 9:00 to ~10* Afternoon: ~3:30 to 4:30 (Except Thurs.) • Keep “lectures” short (30-45min.) and include exercises and/or energizers to keep it moving.NOTE: Include an overview of what’s been done in the program so far and what’s to come.
Lectures and experiments • Present information prior to each experiment* Background/theory* Safety concerns* Procedures/set-ups, etc.* Clean-up expectations • Present a “wrap up” for each experiment* Summarize students results* Reveal “knowns” if applicable
Schedule • Monday – Thursday: 9:00 – 12:00a & 1:15 – 4:30p ( ?) • Friday: 9:00 – 4:30p ( ?) • Monday and Friday morning meetings
Materials • Manuals (1/student) • Notebooks (1/student) • Visor Gogs (1/student + 1/instructor) • Stools (1/(2 students) + 1/instructor) • Experiment reagents, supplies, equipment
Safety concerns • Visible Name Tags • Call roll (by name) at beginning of AM and PM sessions • Participation is required (no i-pods, phone calls, sleeping, etc.) • Prepare well (mentally and physically) • Follow the itinerary (TIME AND PLACES are most important). Please do not excuse students early. • HOODS DO NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY IN 502.
The Materials • Materials have been prepared for the planned experiments and demonstrations and are in 501N • Please (all) help with obtaining materials, clean-up, and removing materials before and after each experiment and/or demo. • If something is missing, let me know and I will take care of it. • Use “time fillers” when necessary.
TIPS • Be prepared (especially at 1st)! • Heads-on/hands-on involvement is the key! • Have fun! (It’s OK for you to follow along with the experiment.) • Emphasize the importance of creativity, thinking, and understanding. • Relate to real-world applications when possible. • Try to address a variety of learning styles and appeal to ALL of the senses (safely, of course) • Offer positive reinforcement (attention, compliments, lottery tickets)
