The mission of VA STAR is to train students in the field of computer refurbishment and to increase the technology base of schools, community centers and families.
Vision To increase opportunity and equity for those most in need through solutions which protect and promote well-being in every community. Mission To improve quality of life through applied research and technical assistance to communities by pioneering solutions that yield measurable results.

VA STAR Report Card • 17 school divisions in Virginia • 100’s of Virginia students studying the field of computer refurbishment and engineering • 50 Bridging the Gap events throughout Virginia in two years • 4,000 plus computers, laptops, and printers refurbished since 2009 • $245,000 Productivity Investment Fund Grant • $255,000 savings to the Commonwealth in 2010-11 • $312,000 savings to the Commonwealth in 2011-12 • $275,000 equipment donations thus far in 2012-13 • $425,000 funding for two years VA General assembly.

The Virginia General Assembly is the legislative body of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the oldest legislative body in the Western Hemisphere, established on July 30, 1619 Three pronged approach: PIF grant, Sec. of Education, General Assembly PWC School Board Legislative Priority – Activates a Lobbyist Follow the money – State Finance Senators and their districts Present to State Finance Committees and to Governor of Virginia Have Superintendents write their delegates and senators Pressure!!!
The Future • Increase VA STAR sites into the highest LCI • Apply for LLC or Non Profit status • Lobby Virginia General Assembly for continued funding • Continue to the refine the scalable model • MI STAR? • Build on Angell Elementary school project • Develop a national U.S.A STAR plan
