Restorative Practices and San Francisco Public Schools The fundamental premise of restorative practices is that people are happier, more cooperative and productive, and more likely to make positive changes when those in authority do things with them, rather than to them or for them. Restorative practices is a new field of study that has the potential to positively influence human behavior and strengthen civil society around the world. San Francisco schools are adapting Restorative Practices to build positive relationships and effect change in how teachers and students interact.

  3. What to look for in the upcoming school year • ExCEL Site Coordinator or designee must attend one of the RP workshops scheduled 8/7th and 8/8th of the August Institute • You are assigned to a cohort by CBO. • You are committed to attend 4 RP trainings this year. The dates are pre set so you can add them to your calendar. (ExCEL will provide food but we are looking for hosts sites to have the meetings • You are expected to implement RP into your programs. DC’s will check and assist with your progress • Karen Polk is also available to assist throughout the year upon request

Restorative Practices Cohort by CBO • Cohort 1: Urban Services/Bayview YMCA/ ASEP/ ROCK/ Chinatown YMCA • Cohort 2: BACR/ YMCA Stonestown • Cohort 3: YMCA Embarcadero /GLO/RDNC/CYC/Reading Partners/ • SF Arts ED/Jamestown/ Up On Top • Cohort 4: YMCA Mission/Mission Graduates/Mission Neighborhood/ • Mission YMCA /SNBC Aspiranet/Telegraph Hill/Buchanan/ Presidio YMCA

  5. Ongoing cohort workshops throughout the school year • September 5th, 12, 19th and 26th (10:00-11:30) – • Circles (community building, repairing harm) • November *starting 10/31st, Nov 7th, 14, 21st (10:00-11:30) – • Affective Statements/RP language • January 9th, 16th,23rd, 30th (10:00-11:30) – • Doing things “with” inclusion, fair process • D. March 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th (10:00-11:30) – • Traditional vs Restorative (shifting away from punitive to RP)
