All About Anne Fogarty • Born: Anne Whitney in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, February 2, 1919 • Education: Attended Allegheny College, Meadville, Pennsylvania, 1936-37; studied drama at Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh, 1937-38; studied design at East Hartman School of Design, 1939. • Died: January 15, 1980, in New York.

Influences and Inspiration • Fogarty moved to New York in 1938 where she worked as a fitting-model for Harvey Berin a well-known Seventh Avenue maker of high quality dresses, while looking for acting parts. • When she received an acting job, Berin encouraged her to think about becoming a stylist instead, and in 1948 Fogarty began designing clothes for the Youth Guild.

  4. This famous American designer was known for her version of the New Look called the "Paper Doll" silhouette. • The design elements of this look was the fitted bodice, dropped neckline and very full skirts. • This dress is a perfect example of that style of design she made so famous. • In addition this style of clothing earned her a Coty Award in 1951.   7. Fall 1957 • In the Fall collection of 1957, Fogarty coordinated a tailored coat with a knit dress.

  8. 1964 • Anne Fogarty’s fall 1964 collection: wool dress with a satin pull-through bow under a raccoon fur cape coat • She was selected as one of the Young Women of the Year by Mademoiselle magazine
