RETRO Modelling Activities • RETRO is a 5th framework EU program with 12 partners(MPI-M, CNRS, KNMI, UiO, UCamb, ISA, FMI, ETH-Z, TNO, MPI-BGC, NILU, UBremen) • Main Objective: “Reanalysis of the tropospheric chemical composition over the past 40 years” • Approach: Develop emission data sets, stratospheric boundary conditions and use several models to simulate 1960-2000 using ERA-40 meteorology • Heritage and links: several previous and ongoing EU projectsPOET, TRADEOFF, TROTREP, MOZAIC, GMES • Project Duration: Jan. 2003 – Dec. 2005
Work Package Structure • WP1: Emissions – focus on anthropogenic emissions and biomass burning • WP2: Data sets – collect data sets from 1960s-1980s, prepare data sets for model validation, extend NILU data base • WP3: Sensitivity studies and evaluation – model-data intercomparison, attribution experiments • WP4: Long-term simulations – prepare meteorological data and models, run and evaluate simulations • WP5: Policy and Implications – scenarios, radiative forcing, assessment of uncertainties

Link to ACCENT • Several RETRO partners participate in ACCENT • RETRO emissions and model results will be made available at the end of the project • RETRO model intercomparison and model-data comparison is open to community – standardisation of tools (model QA) • Collection of old measurements and extended observational data base
