INTRODUCTION • The temptation of our Lord Jesus Christ • Why did Jesus face this 40 days temptation in the wilderness? • To identify with humanity: Heb 4:15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. • To succeed where Adam failed thereby bringing victory over sin to those who believe on Him: Rom 5:18 Therefore, as through one man's offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man's righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. • To show us how to overcome temptation www.suscopts.org
FACING TEMPTATION • We know the Lord Jesus Christ was in the wilderness for 40 days but nothing is said of what happened. • We know the Lord Jesus Christ was tempted three times after the forty days were finished. • This account gets down to where we live on a daily basis, every believer faces temptation. • The Lord Jesus Christ reveals three things we need to overcome temptation. www.suscopts.org
THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT • The Lord Jesus Christ’s journey into the wilderness was accompanied by the power of the Holy Spirit. • “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil” (Matthew 4:1). • We are foolish to think we can survive in the wilderness on our own • Gal 3:3 Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? • We are weak when compared with the principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world and spiritual wickedness in high places. www.suscopts.org
THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT • “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Eph 6:12). • Facing temptation on our own is like a very small country warring against US • We need somebody with us who scares the devil, who causes him to tremble in fear. That somebody is the Holy Spirit. The same power that kicked him out of heaven will conquer him on earth. • “Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it” (Col 2:15). www.suscopts.org
THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT • How to get the power of the Holy Spirit? • “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit” (Gal 5:25). • “And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit” (Eph 5:18). • “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Gal 5: 22-23). • Live filled fruit walk in the Spirit. www.suscopts.org
THE WORD OF GOD • When the Lord Jesus Christ was facing temptation He used the Word of God: • He didn’t try to argue the devil down or reason with Him • He didn’t try to impress Satan with a great display of power • Satan would have us to believe that we can embrace certain forms of temptation and overcome them • There are some things the Bible says to flee from (fornication 1Co 6:18, idolatry 1Co 10:14, love of wealth 1Ti 6:11, youthful lusts 2Ti 2:22) • don’t try to display your spiritual power by playing with temptation - run from it • He didn’t try to shout the devil down • all the shouting in the world will not overcome Satan if we don’t know the Word of God www.suscopts.org
THE WORD OF GOD • Notice that even after quoting scripture Satan kept coming back. • We erroneously think that if we quote a scripture it will scare the devil to death and he’ll run. • Notice, Satan quoted the scripture back to the Jesus Christ • What do you do when Satan gives you a scriptural reason to justify sin? • “Well, since you put it that way Satan, I guess it wouldn’t hurt just this one time” • “You know Satan, you do have a good point. I never looked at it that way before” • When Satan quotes the scripture, he distorts it, cast doubt on it, and deny it. • We need to know what the Word of God says but we must realize that quoting scripture is not a secret formula that is going to magically make the devil disappear. He already knows what the Bible says www.suscopts.org
COMMITMENT • If there is an area where we fail it is here. Everything hinges on our commitment. • The Lord Jesus Christ quoted scripture but it wasn’t His ability to quote scripture that gave Him victory. He quoted scripture to let Satan know what He was committed to. • The Lord Jesus Christ was committed to the obeying the Word of God. • Many people know the Word, can quote the Word and shout up a storm but are not committed to the Word. • It’s not the hearers of the Word of God that are justified but the doers of the Word “but he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does” (James 1:25) www.suscopts.org
COMMITMENT • It is our commitment to the Word of God that gives us victory over temptation and sin. • We can’t go around compromising the Word and expect to walk in victory • We must be committed by being submitted - James 4:7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. • Psalm 119:1-11 • The psalmist prays that his heart will be committed to doing what the Word says • The psalmist hides the Word in his heart, “That he might not sin” www.suscopts.org
COMMITMENT • Blessed are the undefiled in the way, Who walk in the law of the Lord! • Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, Who seek Him with the whole heart! • They also do no iniquity; They walk in His ways. • You have commanded us To keep Your precepts diligently. • Oh, that my ways were directed To keep Your statutes! • Then I would not be ashamed, When I look into all Your commandments. • I will praise You with uprightness of heart, When I learn Your righteous judgments. • I will keep Your statutes; Oh, do not forsake me utterly! • How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. • With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! • Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You! www.suscopts.org
CONCLUSION • Notice the Lord Jesus Christ was tempted three times and in three different ways • I John 2:16 For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. • The Lord Jesus Christ was tempted in these three areas, Adam and Eve were tempted in these same areas, so will we. • Temptation in all its forms and fashions will fall into these three categories. • While we are in this wilderness we will face temptation but we can overcome if we walk in the power of the Holy Spirit, stay full of the Word of God and remain committed to what it says. www.suscopts.org
