Audience Analysis • Why is it important to know about your audience --- your students? • You can plan instruction better. • You can meet their needs. • You can motivate them. • You can help them learn.
What you need to know… • Entry behaviors • Prior knowledge • Attitudes toward content and you • Academic motivation • Educational ability and levels • General learning preferences • Group characteristics
Welcome video • Short 4-5 minutes • Get their Attention • Make it Relevant • Make them feel Confident • Make them feel Satisfied

Introductory discussion activity • Purpose – students get to know each other • Share ideas & information about themselves • Have fun the first week online • Build relationships
Create an activity for your students • Best if it relates to the course • You need to add rules for participation • Answer main question • Respond to at least two other people
Summary • Online courses need more motivation than on campus courses • You must systematically integrate it from the beginning • Get students to interact with course and each other
