  1. Today’s AgendaWed 5/21/13 • WTW Rules • WTW lesson – Menstral Cycle & Pregnancy • Work on Final Exam Review Sheet

  2. Review the male anatomy http://app.discoveryeducation.com/player/view/assetGuid/E2FBBD1E-717B-4490-B486-3ADCD8EA46B5

  3. Menstruation (Having periods)

  4. Menstruation If pregnancy does not occur, this lining is shed (removed) Lining made up of blood & tissue Passes from uterus through cervix & vagina to outside of body Tampons (inserted in vagina) & sanitary pads (attached on underwear) absorb blood & tissue Process repeats about once a month to create this new lining If pregnancy occurs (the fertilized egg implants in the uterine lining), a period does not occur

  5. Review the female anatomy http://app.discoveryeducation.com/player/view/assetGuid/F4A67FF3-7C1F-4816-9FCC-586272F45B9E

  6. Let’s Talk About Pregnancy It is important to know the parts of the reproductive system and what each does in order to understand how a pregnancy occurs.

  7. Important Definitions • Vaginal Intercourse – when a man’s penis is placed inside a woman’s vagina • Ovulation – when the ovary inside the woman’s body releases an egg • Ejaculation – when a man releases semen (the fluid containing sperm) from his penis

  8. Ovulation – when the ovary inside the woman’s body releases an egg A female has two ovaries and releases an egg from one ovary about once a month. This is called ovulation and is shown here. A female can only become pregnant a few days before and after ovulation occurs.

  9. In most women, ovulation occurs about 2 weeks after her period starts, but can occur earlier or later. From this diagram you can also see that the cervix has a narrow opening that allows sperm to travel through it. It is through this same narrow opening that menstrual blood passes when a female is not pregnant and the lining of the uterus is shed.

  10. How does pregnancy occur? During vaginal intercourse, the man’s penis is placed inside the female’s vagina. The man releases sperm from his penis (ejaculation). In this picture, a man has ejaculated in the vagina; sperm are traveling from the vagina, through the cervix, uterus, and into the fallopian tubes.

  11. Sperm have tail-like structures enabling them to “swim” to reach the egg.

  12. Fertilization Fertilization – the joining of the egg and sperm in the fallopian tube If a man and woman have sexual intercourse around the time of ovulation, the egg and the sperm can unite. This is called conception or fertilization.

  13. Fertilization occurs in the fallopian tube.

  14. Important Definitions Implantation – when the fertilized egg travels to the uterus and attaches to the lining of the uterus

  15. The fertilized egg travels from the fallopian tube to the uterus and attaches itself to the lining of the uterus. This is called implantation. The lining of the uterus is necessary to nourish the baby during the first few weeks of pregnancy. Here inside the uterus, the developing baby or fetus will grow for approximately nine months.

  16. Because the inside lining of the uterus is being used to nourish the baby, a woman will not menstruate or have a period while she is pregnant. Women usually know they are pregnant because they “miss” or don’t have a period when they expect one. They can also have other signs of pregnancy such as breast tenderness and nausea, especially in the morning. You can miss or skip your period for other reasons, but if a woman doesn’t have a period and she is having sex, she should get a pregnancy test. Here you can see how the baby actually grows inside the uterus. The cervix, which is the bottom part of the uterus, keeps the baby inside the uterus. The narrow opening in the cervix will begin to open during the last weeks of pregnancy. This process is called dilation. During labor, contractions of the uterus open the cervix even more so it is big enough for the baby to pass through into the vagina and be born.

  17. Let’s Review How a Female Gets Pregnant • Ovulation (egg released by ovary) must occur • Vaginal intercourse with ejaculation (sperm released in vagina) around the time of ovulation • Egg & sperm have to unite in fallopian tube (fertilization) • Fertilized egg has to implant in the uterus (implantation)

  18. Why do some teens get pregnant? • Think it can’t happen to me • Sex not planned • Think it will help keep their boyfriend • Want to have a baby • Think it shows love STAND UP FOR YOUR FUTURE HEALTH AND HAPPINESS!!
