Where do you think Somalia is? • Somalia is located in the Horn of Africa. • It is also known as the Federal Republic of Somalia. • Somalia has the longest coastline for a country in Africa. • The population is around 10 million. • Somalia has 2 main rivers, the Shebelle and the Juba. Somalia’s general climate is a tropical one, as it is situated close to the Equator. • It is hot through most of the year, with temperatures ranging from 30 to 40°C. • Somalia experiences irregular rainfall and monsoon winds throughout the year. • The hottest city of Somalia during the Summer is Berbera. Culture • The official languages of Somalia are Somali and Arabic • In ancient times, Somalia was known as the Kingdom of Punt to the ancient Egyptians as it was a major trade centre • For thousands of years, Somalia was also known as ‘Regio Aromatica’ because it was believed to be the original home of myrrh and incense • Most Somalis are Sunni Muslims • The currency used is the Somali Shilling (Sh.So.)
