Objectification of women -My Last Duchess Suzanne Liu Mike Lin
Summary of Poem This poem centers around a duke who is being set up for another marriage after he has been widowed. During a tour of his house, they see a picture of his last duchess and the duke starts recounting his memories of the duchess.
Major Theme: Objectification of women “Sir, ‘twas not Her husband’s presence only, called that spot of joy into the Duchess’ cheek” It can be inferred from this quote that the duchess was beautiful and many men admired her beauty.
Major Theme: Objectification of women “She thanked men […] as if she ranked my gift of a nine hundred year’s old name with anybody’s gift.” It is suggested in this quote that the speaker is already starting to get angry because the duchess doesn’t seem him as superior over other men and that she would mingle with everyone.
Major Theme: Objectification of women “she smiled, no doubt, Whene’er I passed her; but how passed without much the same smile?” This quote shows the way he sees his relationship with the duchess. To him, she is merely an object and he expects that object to be only his. This quote is quite sarcastic and it suggests that the duke gets quite upset when his duchess smiles at other men.
Major Theme: Objectification of women In the end, it is revealed that the duke ordered for his duchess to be killed. The duke always saw the duchess as his personal property and he treated her quite objectively. He was unhappy that the duchess didn’t belong just to him, and that she was looked at by other men. The duke’s killing of his duchess is a metaphor for people’s throwing away of defective things.
