Hannibal watches the elephants get jabbed with iron pokers and run at the Roman soldiers. Hannibal is thinking he must fulfill his promise he had made as a boy, and be the sworn enemy of Rome. Hannibal is telling his troops to retreat from the Romans as if they were losing, and then trick the Romans by surrounding them. Hannibal hears the elephants get shot with spears and arrows and trample upon the soldiers behind them. Hannibal is feeling angry because both Carthage and Rome want to dominate the fertile island of Sicily, and control trade at the Straits of Messina. Hannibal and his soldiers marched through the Alps with men, horses, and war elephants.
